Blog Move to WordPress

You might have noticed that the blog looks a little different. That’s because I recently switched from FrogCMS to WordPress for my blog.

I really liked using FrogCMS for as a blog and content management system, but in the end it lacked too many features. I’m still using it as a content management system but being that WordPress can function as a CMS, I might change that. The part that was killing me was comment spam, there just wasn’t any plugins to deal with it in FrogCMS.

So far I’m extremely impressed with WordPress. It’s been a long time since I’ve used it like this but it’s come a long way since then.

The move was relatively painless. I set up a local dev instance on my workstation and made sure everything was working correctly before moving it up to SliceHost. I went with the Thesis theme, customized the look and then manually moved my posts.

The only hurdle came when it was time to move the database up to my production server. I did a MySQL dump and tried to restore it but kept getting some bizare errors trying to import the dump file. I took the easy way out and remembered reading a post by Patrick McKenzie where he talks about importing and exporting from the WordPress admin. That worked like a charm for me.

Now I’m using the Akismet plugin for comment spam. So far it’s awesome. No more comment spam! Things are looking up…
