Earthlingquote

Web design estimates and proposals are fun! Eh. Not really. Designing websites is fun. Estimating them is a necessary evil (if you want to pay the bills). Earthlingquote is the web based software that will simplify this task.

Initially there will be free version which you can use to give web site estimates, quotes, or a simple proposal. Later will come a version with some pretty cool features that you can use for a low monthly fee. Really, it’ll be affordable. You might just want to use the free version; no worries because the free one will always be there. Absolutely no time restrictions.

Why web design proposal software? Well because it’s something that comes up over and over again. Questions I seem to get often:

  • How much should I charge for this web site?
  • How should I charge?
  • Company X wants a website design proposal, now what?

You get the picture. How do I do it? Well, I basically use an Excel spreadsheet as do most people I know. And that just seems ridiculous.

I searched. I really searched for some easy to use software that would let me give quick estimates and proposals to clients. I found stuff, but the stuff I found was either Excel based or too much work to use. This isn’t rocket science here. I really don’t get it. So I’ve decided to build something that you can use to easily create a web design estimate or crank out a website proposal.

I’m just starting the project so there are a lot of things that I’ve not decided on yet and a couple of things I’m just getting around to doing. One of those things is deciding on a web hosting company. After much research I’ve settled on Slicehost. They’ve got great prices and I like how they’re running their operation.

What language will this be in? Groovy will be the language and Grails the framework. I just love all the goodies you get right out of the box — Spring and Hibernate especially.

I’ll be writing about the development process while it’s happening and posting some screenshots of what I have from time to time. I’ll also post advice on how to give web design estimates, quotes and generate proposals. You might see some slightly off-topic stuff every once in a while as well. I’ll be very open about all major decisions from infrastructure to languages and frameworks.

Hopefully a few people will find what I build useful; if that’s the case I’ll consider it a success.
